Points of Light is a spring celebration of unity and renewal that brings together the food, music, and traditions of Lowell’s diverse cultures. The centerpiece of the night is a special ceremony in which participants personalize water lanterns that will be released onto the Western Canal, creating hundreds of floating points of light.

Join Lowell National Historical Park on May 4th at 2 p.m. for a special panel discussion on the history of May Day and Lowell's connections to the events that took place in Haymarket Square in Chicago on May 4, 1886. What, to the American worker, do either of these events mean today? 

The panel will feature local experts Robert Forrant, Jeannette Huezo, Traci Parker, and Elizabeth Pellerito.

This free event will take place at the Visitor Center (246 Market Street) Free parking is available at the Lowell National Historical Park lot (304 Dutton Street).

EARTH DAY CELEBRATION BIKE RIDE

Celebrate Earth Day with a bike ride around Lowell, where we’ll be stopping at many locations that make Lowell unique and contribute to its sustainability!

This ride is open to adult riders 18+ of all skill levels and will go at a fun pace that leaves no one out. The ride will include many on road segments so please be prepared to ride in the road. Please register prior to the ride so we know to expect you. Please arrive with a reliable bike or visit the bike shop before coming. All riders are required to wear a helmet. Participants will be expected to practice responsible riding techniques that will be demonstrated and modeled by ride leaders.

OPEN STUDIOS AT WESTERN AVENUE STUDIOS

 So much to see – you’ll be amazed at what you find. Every month is an opportunity to talk to artists about their work, how they make it, what inspires them. It will take you more than one visit to check out all the art you’ll find at Western Avenue Studios and Lofts.

  • Open Studios and Lofts happen from noon until 5pm.

  • There is free parking on site. If the parking lot if full there is a free shuttle bus that runs to off site parking 3 minutes away.

  • There are docents at the entry doors to help you get started on your visit – make sure to chat with them if you have any questions.

  • The Studios building is handicap accessible with an elevator for floors 2 – 5 and a ramp from floor 2 down to 1. There are handicap accessible restrooms on each floor.

BIKE MAINTENANCE WORKSHOP

BIKE MAINTENANCE WORKSHOP

This workshop teaches participants how to assess the condition of all parts of their bike, how to keep it clean and lubricated, and will provide an overview of basic tune up skills. Each skill will be reviewed by a mechanic, then participants will practice on their own bike with feedback. No previous experience in bike repair or maintenance is required. Topics to be reviewed include Air, brakes, chain, shifting, quick releases, cleaning and lubrication.

ABOUT THE FILM: This film follows the Recycled Orchestra of Cateura, a Paraguayan musical group who live next to one of South America’s largest landfills. This unlikely orchestra plays music from instruments made entirely out of garbage, recycling trash and inspiring dreams.
