On Sunday, October 9, Lowell National Historical Park is hosting a public, family-friendly “community science” Dragonfly Monitoring event as part of the nationwide Dragonfly Mercury Project monitoring pollution in local waterways.
We will be collecting dragonfly larvae at a pond in the Lowell Dracut Tyngsboro State Forest. Meet up 9:45-10:00am at the parking lot at the entrance to the State Forest at the end of Trotting Park Road. We will be collecting dragonfly larvae from the brook, identifying, measuring, and preparing them to be shipped to a lab. Please bring a pair of waterproof boots if you plan on helping us to collect samples.
This project is being conducted in National Parks across the United States to measure mercury pollution. Check out this video about the project: https://www.nps.gov/articles/000/dmpvideo.htm
